While living in Australia in the late 1990's, I fell in love with the photography of Ken Duncan and was thrilled to travel there to attend a workshop with him in 2011 where I shot these treasured images.

That was the temperature…17 below zero on that cold January morning in Alberta. And it was spectacular.
This is the second morning I walked on a frozen lake in the middle of Alberta. The huge cracks and chunks of ice are caused from the pressure of continual freezing and expansion on the lake.
After braving a dark, cold sunrise down in the valley where my fingertips started to freeze, I headed back to my vehicle only to turn around and see this glorious mountain scene. It was my favorite image of the day.
Ice bubbles are methane gas floating upwards and freezing as it gets closer to the cold surface of the lake. I took this photograph of ice bubbles on Abraham Lake at sunrise. Shortly after, I was walking on the ice and found a spot that wasn’t quite frozen solid anymore…my left leg plunged into the frigid cold water up to my knee. Thank goodness for great gear or I would have been in trouble. I headed to the vehicle to dry out and gather myself so that ended my morning of shooting in this incredible location.
Have you ever walked on a frozen lake? This was my first time and it was a surreal, eerie feeling. It was so cold and there were 30 mile-an-hour wind gusts blowing the snow and my camera gear across the ice. But the cracks were fantastic and I couldn’t help myself but to lay face down on the ice to get this shot. Barrier Lake, Alberta.
The winter light is magical reflecting off the peaceful blanket of snow. It was a cold 17 below zero, my world was still and quiet.
Living just 10 miles south of the Canadian Border, British Columbia is like our "back yard" which makes it easy to explore this beautiful land.

This is the view from our fishing resort, Sund’s Lodge, looking west towards Vancouver Island. The islands are intimate and the scenery changes moment by moment.
There’s something about old boats that are intriguing…they seem to have a story to tell. Wonder what this one’s story is?
Another view from Sund’s Lodge.
While on the Sund’s Lodge fishing boat, we trolled around a large school of herring commonly referred to as a “bait ball” where birds and sometimes whales feed upon. As we were watching, five bald eagles began to dive down into the herring, grasping fish in their beaks and talons.
Views from around Sund’s Lodge are spectacular. The layers of islands and mountains make for a spectacular backdrop from the fishing boats. This is looking east towards British Columbia’s mainland.

What a beautiful sunset sky above this charming wooden boat that lives just down the road from Sund’s Lodge.
One spectacular summer day on the fishing boat, we detoured to visit an area Orca and Humpback were frequenting. As we stalled the boat, a pod of eight Orcas swam toward us, eventually passing under our boat. As they swam off, another pod of ten passed by the side of our boat. To hear their sounds and feel their energy is magical. These two were swimming in perfect harmony side by side.

Charleston, South Carolina, the heart of the deep South, feels like a distant home. Each time I visit I am in awe of the beauty and culture, and most of all the Southern hospitality.
Built 1745 to 1755, then burned by the British Army in 1779. Rebuilt in 1826, then burned by the Federal Army in the Civil War, 1865. It is a beautiful, sacred place.

Aloha. What more needs to be said?
New Year’s Eve 2017…26 acres of land collapsed into the ocean and opened up this brilliant lava flow at Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. I was there six weeks later and experienced this up close and personal from a boat. The heat, the smell and intensity coming from this lava flow is intense. I read a couple weeks after my visit that several boat companies were being fined for getting too close to this lava flow…I think I might have been on one of those boats.
This shows a different, wider perspective of the amazing lava flow.
I was fortunate to have been able to view this lava flow from a helicopter as well as up close and personal from a boat. This view shows perspective of its location.
Hovering in a helicopter just off the surface of this active lava flow, I feel as though I was looking into the Eye of the Earth.
One of the many lush waterfalls and foliage on the Big Island of Hawaii.
With a little help from a flash, I was able to capture the beautiful details of this fern frond growing wild in the forest.
It wasn’t the most ideal conditions, but I was able to capture the Milky Way glowing above the Big Island. I’ve never seen the stars shine so brightly, filling the sky like I’ve never experienced.

Along the coast of Kauai are inlets called sea caves. I shot this one from a helicopter.
A school of Spinner Dolphins suddenly appeared beside our boat. Their dance was mesmerizing…and quick.
The island of Kauai is rich with lush and varied landscapes.
I've never seen more extraordinary light than in Iceland when I visited in July 2015. This is what it looked like at sunset and sunrise which happened around midnight and 3 a.m. Photographing in these hours left little time for sleep which is why I now have a t-shirt that says "Sleepless in Iceland". I can't wait to go back.

We live in such a beautiful, diverse state. The Pacific Ocean is to the west, the Cascade Mountains are to the east, the tulip fields and rolling hills are south of our home in Ferndale. My heart has always been in the mountains and I am learning to appreciate the water. Yet I always love beauty no matter where it appears.
